The 33-1/3 rpm LP or "long-playing record" as it is also known, is a kind of large flattened-out version of Edison's wax cyclinder, but made instead of black vinyl and played on a gramophone. By the late 1980s, the LP had largely disappeared from store shelves, replaced by the venerable compact tape cassette, and the digital audio compact disc, also known as a CD.
